Pittsburgh Irish Happenings
March 25, 2006
The St. Patrick's Day 'Season' is now complete for this year and it is time to move on to other activities. We anxiously await the news on Devolution in the North of Ireland; tomorrow, March 26 is the deadline to agree to forming a government or dissolving the Assembly and having joint rule from Dublin and London.
Over the past month I have received several new CD's that I'll review over the next week (hopefully, anyway). Plus I also want to tell you about a treasure of older music one of my listeners donated to Echoes of Erin. There are some very interesting artists, some with songs I had not heard before; which makes this collection all the more valuable.
The picture above is the Mural created by the children of Gaelscoil an Lonnain, (ages 4 to 9), an Irish-Medium School on the Falls Road in Belfast. This was the first prize for 2006 which I happened to have won and donated to The Irish Centre of Pittsburgh. It now hangs in a venue which so many more people can see.
Gaelscoil an Lonnain was founded by parents of the Lower Falls / Inner City area of Belfast in response to the closure of their area's only primary school. The parents opted to adapt to the aims of the Irish medium education and has since 1999, seen a lourishing unfunded school in an area of little regeneration.
Another fundraising campaign is now underway and the drawing takes place October 16, 2007. Tickets are only $3.00 each; you can contact George Trainor by email at Steeler059@aol.com or in Pittsburgh, contact Sarah McAuliffe-Bellin at sarahm1916@stargate.net to purchase your tickets.
Until next time...
Slan,
Diane Byrnes
