Pittsburgh Irish Happenings
March 25, 2006

The St. Patrick's Day 'Season' is now complete for this year and it is time to move on to other activities. We anxiously await the news on Devolution in the North of Ireland; tomorrow, March 26 is the deadline to agree to forming a government or dissolving the Assembly and having joint rule from Dublin and London.

Over the past month I have received several new CD's that I'll review over the next week (hopefully, anyway). Plus I also want to tell you about a treasure of older music one of my listeners donated to Echoes of Erin. There are some very interesting artists, some with songs I had not heard before; which makes this collection all the more valuable.

The picture above is the Mural created by the children of Gaelscoil an Lonnain, (ages 4 to 9), an Irish-Medium School on the Falls Road in Belfast. This was the first prize for 2006 which I happened to have won and donated to The Irish Centre of Pittsburgh. It now hangs in a venue which so many more people can see.

Gaelscoil an Lonnain was founded by parents of the Lower Falls / Inner City area of Belfast in response to the closure of their area's only primary school. The parents opted to adapt to the aims of the Irish medium education and has since 1999, seen a lourishing unfunded school in an area of little regeneration.

Another fundraising campaign is now underway and the drawing takes place October 16, 2007. Tickets are only $3.00 each; you can contact George Trainor by email at Steeler059@aol.com or in Pittsburgh, contact Sarah McAuliffe-Bellin at sarahm1916@stargate.net to purchase your tickets.

Until next time...

Slan,

Diane Byrnes

Pittsburgh Irish Happenings #2

St. Patrick's Day Parade Button Party

The Button Party took place Friday, March 9th at Mitchell's Restaurant, 304 Ross Street, Downtown Pittsburgh. A grand time was had by all! The Grand Marshall, Jim Lamb was presented to the crowd as was the Court of Miss Smiling Irish Eyes. Posted here is a group of pictures from the party plus what some of us enjoyed afterwards and then a couple of pictures from the Parade.

Here we have Parade Chairman, Jim Green in front, Jack Goodrich Fundraising Chariman in background, and Grand Marshall, Jim Lamb at the podium.

The young ladies of The Court, Colleen Murphy, a senior at North Hills High School, and Kelly O'Leary, a senior at South Park High School.

Miss Smiling Irish Eyes 2007 - Jocilyn Delaney, a senior Honor Student at Shaler High School. Jocilyn could not make the Button Party as she was in a basketball playoff game against Oakland Catholic.

Here is Kelly O'Leary with her Grandmother, Kate O'Leary, a Daughter of Erin and the 2005 Tara Award Winner.

Here are the parents of Colleen Murphy, Michael and Anna Maria Murphy from the North Hills.

Paraic McCague and Fran Sheedy were enjoying the party. Paraic is with the Pittsburgh Celtic Gaelic Football Club.

It looks like I was still talking when a friend took this shot of Pittsburgh Mayor Luke Raventhal. He was having a good time meeting many of his constituents who hopefully will vote for him in May.

And of course I had to have a photo taken with County Executive, Dan Onorato who brought his daughter Emily with him. He does a really good job and most folks appreciate his unending reserve of energy. Keep it up Dan!!

This is a group of 'big guys'. In front is Jimmy Richert (not as big as the others), Kevin O'Donnell (6'4"), Barry Driscoll (6'7"), and Al Smith (about 6'4"). Jimmy, Kevin and Barry are members of AOH Division 17 in Monroeville. I have had some good times with these guys; tons of laughs and chuckles! Al Smith and I have known each other for a very long time; he works for Congressman Mike Doyle.

Another member of AOH Division 17, Chuck Feeney, a good buddy of mine. We shared some good laughs here. As always, it is so delightful seeing Chuck.

This is Alice and Terry Callahan; Terry is a member of AOH Division 9 in Oakland. A lovely couple, we shared great conversation!

After the Button Party many folks meandered to Mullaney's Harp & Fiddle to enjoy Pittsburgh's own Corned Beef & Curry.

The guys from Division 17 were not unattended; they brought their lovely wives to the Button Party. Here we have Kathy Driscoll in front, Kathy O'Donnell in center, and Barry Driscoll in rear.

Kevin O'Donnell with AOH Division 17 and Tom Goslin a business owner in The Strip.

Declan Gilbert and David Regan, tending bar - always working hard to please and serve the customer.

Regular patrons and good friends are Scott Grady and his fiancee Julia.

Here is Jimmy Richert and Kevin O'Donnell again; they were having a good time and good conversation with many folks!

This is none other than 'The Judge' Maurice Cohill and his wife Anne Mullaney, Proprietor of Mullaney's Harp & Fiddle. That is Michael Fallon in the background.

On Saturday, March 10th, The Easter Rising Band made their debut appearance at the Harp & Fiddle. These nine young men met while attending The Pontifical College Josephinum in Columbus, Ohio. Although no longer studying for the priesthood, these fellows were really entertaining.

Here is Mary Jo and Danny O'Toole from Brookline as they enjoyed The Easter Rising Band.

These next three pictures are different angles of the band.

These guys had a lot of fun perfoming at the Harp as did the audience enjoying and singing along with them.

Well what do you know? Here is Christie Dullea from England (in the blue sweater) up singing with the band. Christie and his wife Jane along with Pat and Patricia Conroy were visiting their first cousin, John and Barbara Conroy. Christie and Pat grew up in Rusmuc, Connemara, Co. Galway but emigrated to England. They all had a grand time this night!

March 17, 2007 - St. Patrick's Day Parade

I think Mayor Luke Ravensthal must have a bit of Irish in him! Here he is with my driver in the Parade, the lovely and beautiful Valerie Grimes (redhead) and her friend Lauren. Valerie and Lauren were very appreciative of the Mayor taking time to have his picture taken with them.

Valerie and her Dad Jay Grimes, have taken care of driving me in the Parade for many years. Valerie keeps my signs wrapped up after each parade so they look good for the next year and her Mom, Ginny makes sure Valerie brings lots of blankets to keep me warm as we drive down the parade route.

Here are Special Friends as they share yet another St. Patrick's Day Parade driving and riding in the 'Echoes of Erin' car.

The end of this Photo Journey, I hope you enjoyed it and until the next time...

Slan,

Diane

Happenings Around My Town

March 14 and 16, 2007

Some fun events leading up to St. Patrick's Day were captured with the following pictures. On Wednesday, March 14th, The McCabes performed in Concert at Mullaney's Harp & Fiddle. The McCabes, based in New York, made their third appearance at the Harp. Their music was very exciting - a combination of rock, contemporary and some good old standards.

Here is Rick Snell on electric guitar and backing vocals, and Sean McCabe on lead vocals, and acoustic guiar.

This photo captures Sean McCabe, Clarence Ferrari on fiddle, Ryan Cavan on Drums and backing vocals, and Chris Posteraro on electric bass and backing vocals. Clarence so sweetly played the fiddle mixing a variety of genres - from fast & fiesty to rock'n & roll'n with a bit of blues & country.

The leader of the band, Sean McCabe!

How good is the band without good sound? Sound is what Jerry O'Neil of O'Neil ProSound provides. Jerry has been the sound engineer in the overall Pittsburgh Music Scene for many, many years. He knows what he is doing and makes everyone sound really good. The way to go Jerry!

Jerry O'Neil

Carol Lavrinc
and Anne Mullaney, Proprietor of the Harp & Fiddle, were enjoying each others company along with The McCabes.

David Regan, Manager of Mullaney's Harp & Fiddle and Shannon Boyle, one of the waite staff, although she was off this evening, were both enjoying the concert. David has been Manager of the Harp since it opened in 1992.

Shannon Boyle,
still enjoying herslf with Roddy Delaney. Roddy is the father of Miss Smiling Irish Eyes 2007 - Jocilyn Delaney.

Here we have Anne Mullaney and Tom Goslin, both enjoying the concert. Anne is also President of 'Neighbors in The Strip' and Tom is one of the business owners in The Strip.

This happy couple, Sandy Haas and Ed McManus, are usually out and about supporting many of the Irish events that occur in and around Pittsburgh. Both Sandy and Ed are members of the Irish American Unity Conference, Pittsburgh Branch.

These three were really enjoying each other's company along with the concert. On the left is Kevin Delaney, in from Chicago; center - Jim Delaney, uncle to Kevin; and on the right is Jim Schenk, a good friend of the Delaney's. Jim Delaney, affectionately known by his friends as 'Lefty', is grandfather to Miss Smiling Irish Eyes 2007.

Most concerts are not complete without dancers around, Susan Kozak and Laura Conroy. Susan is the Artistic Director and Dance Instructor with the Pittsburgh Ceili Club. Laura Conroy, TCRG, is one of the dance instructors with The Burke School of Irish Dance located at the Irish Centre of Pittsburgh.

Good buddies - Brian Regan and Peter Burns from County Cavan. A few years back Peter came to Pittsburgh under the Walsh Visa Program, administered by The Ireland Institute of Pittsburgh. He had worked at Mullaney's Harp & Fiddle and made some very good friends. Peter periodically comes back 'home' to visit with friends and we had the pleasure of his company for St. Patrick's Day 2007.

Friday, March 16th The Ireland Institute of Pittsburgh Presented an Evening with Hugo O'Neill, Hugo Mac Ui Neill Buidhe, Chief of the O'Neill Clan Worldwide & President of the Standing Council of Irish Clans.
The evening began with an Introduction by Jim Lamb, President of The Ireland Institute and Grand Marshall of the Pittsburgh St. Patrick's Day Parade 2007, followed by Prothonotary, Michael Lamb leading us in The Pledge of Alligence with a Marine Flag Guard. Brian O'Neill then presented a synopsis of Irish history, followed by Christine O'Doherty speaking on the O'Neill Summer School. 'The O'Neill' (Hugo O'Neill) gave a presentation on The O'Neill Clan. 'The O'Neill' is from Portugal, where his ancestors settled after the 'Flight of the Earls'.
The speakers gave very interesting presentations and hopefully, folks from the Pittsburgh area will attend the O'Neill Summer School in September 2007. You can call the Ireland Institute at 412.394.3900 for further information. Brian O'Neill will be a guest on Echoes of Erin later in the Spring talking about this subject.

Wife and Husband, Ann Burns and Jim Lamb, President of the Ireland Institute of Pittsburgh and Grand Marshall of the St. Patrick's Day Parade 2007.

Catch the next posting with photos of the Button Party and a couple of shots at the St. Patrick's Day Parade.
