In My Opinion

Hello Ladies and Gentlemen, as a reminder, you can listen to many Echoes of Erin programs at the archives at www.wedo810.com, click on Program Guide, Scroll down to Echoes of Erin, click on a Program #, download and listen, today is Program # 1231. Each week it increases by one, which might be helpful to you.

Next Sunday, October 30th, Mairtin O’Muilleoir, Managing Director of the Belfast Media Group, http://belfastmediagroup.com will be with us with an analysis of the Irish Presidential election.

Our sponsor of The Ireland Report is AOH Sean MacBride Division 32 in Carnegie, PA. and our sponsor for An Inspirational Moment this month is the LAOH Maude Gonne Division 32 in Carnegie.

You can become a Friend of Echoes of Erin by saving $1.25 per week which totals $60 per year; by sending your full donation I will send you a $25.00 OFF Gift Card to Restaurant.com. You can make your check payable to Echoes of Erin and mail to 78 Grant Ave., Pittsburgh PA 15223. Or if you are interested in sponsoring An Inspirational Moment for November of December do give me a ring at 412.781.6368 or send an email to diane.byrnes@verizon.net.

Some musical programs are coming to the Pittsburgh region over the next several weeks and I scheduled interviews with some of the artists. The Balmoral Classic takes place on Friday, November 11 through Sunday, November 13th; lots of excellent music here. George Balderose and I will have a pre-recorded interview for next Sunday highlighting the features of this weekend. The Celtic Tenors are coming to The Strand Theatre in Zelienople on November 27th; I’ll have an interview with Matthew Gilsenan of the Celtic Tenors on November 13th

November brings in a re-newed sponsor for The Ireland Report, the Irish American Unity Conference and on November 27th Sarah McAuliffe Bellin will be my guest in the studio.

Michael Londra and the show ‘Beyond Celtic’ will be in our Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade on November 26th and his show is coming to the region, but the date might change. Michael and I will have an interview closer to his show time. Then moving into December, I’m expecting to conduct an interview with Mickey Coleman; another singer, musician, song writer from Co. Tyrone in the North of Ireland. I have been airing Mickey’s music for the past few months and have received some good feed back, so I’ll have a chat with him.

I know many of you are such ardent fans of Celtic Thunder and Ryan Kelly. Many of Ryan’s fans are attempting to have him nominated for Best New Artist given by the Irish Music Association. You too can have your vote count by going to this website and filling out the information. www.irishmusicassociation.com/irishmusicawards/3.newartist.htm.

The Clancy Brothers & Tommy Makem Revisited
Special Guest: Sean Cogan of The Cogan Brothers

The "Cork Hornpipe" selection is from the 1952 recording. It was recorded by Jean Ritchie in 1952 but not released on LP until 1960.

The "Wren Song" recording is from the famous 1955 "Lark in the Morning" release. "These recordings started it all...."

Intro: Diane Hamilton was a Field-Collector of Folk Songs and in 1955 she traveled around Ireland & collected many songs with several recorded in the Makem home in Keady, South Armagh. Yet more songs were collected from the Clancy’s in Carrick-on-Suir, Co. Tipperary. The final result is this treasure “The Lark in the Morning”

Dowdling by Mrs. Joan Clancy
The Little Beggarman by Mrs. Sarah Makem & Tommy Makem
LP ‘The Lark in the Morning’

Barnyards of Delgaty - live in Boston, 1959. This song is pretty common to CB&TM fans, but this recording is an unreleased gem.

The Wind That Shakes the Barley’ featuring Tommy Makem
CD ‘CB&TM ‘
The Rising of The Moon: Irish Songs of Rebellion
This is an excellent example of the many songs which serve both as love lyric and rebel song. The scene described refers to the 1798 rising. The words are the work of Robert Dwyer Joyce, a professor of English Literature at Catholic University in Dublin. In danger of arrest for rebel activities. Joyce fled to the US. He later returned to Ireland and died in Dublin in 1883.

Old Man Came Courting - 1961, live. It's a shame this recording was never released in the 60's. It was recorded at the same sessions that produced their first Columbia LP "A Spontaneous Performance Recording" at the NYC Columbia 30th St. studio. It wasn't released until 1995 on the boxed set "Ain't It Grand: Un-Iissued Gems".

The Croppy Boy featuring Liam Clancy
CD ‘CB&TM "
The Rising of The Moon: Irish Songs of Rebellion"

Maid of Fife - 1964, live - rare Canadian Mono Mix. This is from the LP "Recorded Live In Ireland" which was recorded in August of 1964 at Ulster Hall in Belfast. There is a rare Canadian mono pressing of the LP which switches "Nightingale" and "Wild Rover" in the running order of the LP. Also, Maid of Fife has the complete spoken intro by Tom Clancy. It was edited, quite noticeably, on all other versions of the LP which is a shame because it's really funny! The LP also has a spoken intro to "Rocks of Bawn" by Paddy Clancy which was cut completely on the other versions of the record.

Freedom's Sons - 1966 - UK only 45 RPM - Studio version. his studio recording was only released in the UK on 45 rpm in 1966. It has not appeared on any other LP or CD since that time.

Introduction by Tommy Makem, The Old Orange Flute featuring Tommy Makem on vocals the chorus
CD “The Best of the CB & TM”. Recorded March 13, 1964 at Carnegie Hall, New York. From the Columbia album “Live & Lusty: The Clancy Brothers & Tommy Makem Return to Carnegie Hall”

Reels: Last Night’s Fun Set by Cherish The Ladies
CD ‘The Girls Won’t Leave the Boys Alone’

The Ireland Report with Brian Nolan, Galway

I’m A Free Born Man Of The Traveling People
CD ‘The Best of the Clancy Brothers & Tommy Makem’. Song written by Ewan McCall, recorded Nov. 5, 1966 at Carnegie Hall, NY Liam Clancy gives the introduction.

Isn’t It Grand Boys
