In My Opinion

There are many thoughts running around in my brain on Irish issues, perhaps I should zip my lip and not say anything, but then again, maybe I should.

The first issue is on our U.S. Federal authorities demanding from Boston College the oral history testimonies on The Troubles in the North of Ireland. These testimonies were given under the auspices of ‘confidentiality’. The Police Service of Northern Ireland (PSNI) want these testimonies to investigate the disappearance and murder 40 years ago of Jean McConville, a mother of ten children whose body was recovered in 2003. For years the police wanted nothing to do with investigating Mrs. McConville; now they want everything Boston College has.

Should our U.S. government be successful in acquiring these documents from Boston College it jeopardizes all sorts of oral history plus it can have a very negative impact on the peace process in the North of Ireland. How could people dare open up and speak the truth with the possibility of interrogation and prosecution by the Brits or some other government body.

In my opinion, Irish America better get together and protest these actions by our government. They are being used as a pawn by the British government.

The whole bloody affair in the North of Ireland was a result of the unfairness and injustice of the British government for so many years. If anyone is to be prosecuted for death & destruction, it should be the entire British government.

Bob Banerjee & The Banervan

Put this date and venue on your calendar -- "RIDE FOR RINTY" -- Sunday, August 21st from 11:00 a.m. until Midnight at the Harmony Ridge, 1280 Breitenstein Road, Ambridge, PA.

Bob Banerjee, is one of Pittsburgh's most talented musicians on fiddle and mandolin; he is also the 'Curry' in 'Corned Beef & Curry' -- a very descriptive name for an American Irishman, John McCann, and a Delhi, Indian, Bob Banerjee; together with their third bandmate, Todd Hartman, make up one of the most dynamic groups on the Pittsburgh music scene. Bob's wife Rinty suffers from MS and has no use of her muscles below her neck, but that doesn't stop her. What has stopped Rinty is the fact that their accessible van 'bit the dust'; no longer can she get to her doctor's appointments or go out of the house as there is not transportation to accommodate her. The Banervan needs replaced. You can only imagine what it must cost!!

There could be an answer to this prayer! Some of Bob and Rinty's musical friends are getting together to play some excellent music to raise very needed funds to purchase a new van -- Goal is $50,000. So far, they have raised about $12,000.

Bob Banerjee has been performing in the Tri-State area and around the world for decades. He has performed solo, toured over a year with Gaelic Storm, and also is a member of 'Common Threads' a local Folk Group. Bob has performed with most of the local Pittsburgh Irish talent, and has been a musician on many of their recordings.

Now Bob needs all of his friends to come to his aid next Sunday, August 21st. At the Harmony Ridge venue, there will be two stages, Indoor and an Outdoor Acoustic Stage. Some of the individuals and groups performing various genres include: Chris Semonik, Switchplay, Cue Ball, T & A (Terry & Alex), Joel Lindsey & the Boulevard of the Allies, Acoustic Jamage, Cahal Dunne, Bob Banerjee & Friends, Jimbo and the Soupbones, Dallas Marks Band, Garrett & Mandy and the Mudslingers, Mike Gallagher, Maddie Arnold, Mike Strasser, Mike Conroy, Sean McIntyre / Mark Murtisch, Leanne Regalla, Frank Piscopo, Rob Lord, Casey & Dan, Maddie Georgi, Nathan Zoob, Jeremy Colbert, James Hovan, Susan Powers (Devlish Mary). This is some line-up of talent!

There is an Admission: $15 for Individuals; $20 per couple; $25 family of up to 4, $5 each for additional family members. Food & drink are separate.

If you are unable to attend this event you can still donate to the cause. Go to www.banervan.com. Click on 'donations' and contribute via Paypal or credit card. You can also send a check, made payable to 'Achieva Trust for Anuka Banerjee' to Banervan.com c/o Ken Doerbecker, PO Box 606, Wexford PA 15090. You can check out the venue at http://www.harmonyridgeevents.com.

Any help you can provide to Bob & Rinty Banerjee will be greatly appreciated by them. Over time and years I have seen Bob Banerjee give so much of himself, gratis. Let's help them out!!

Pittsburgh Happenings

Dear Friends,

The past few weeks have been quite busy and oh so very hot! On Sunday, July 31st The High Kings performed in a FREE concert at Hartwood Acres. They are absolutely brilliant!

Saturday, August 6th Orla Fallon performed in concert at Carnegie Music Hall of Homestead in Munhall; she was outstanding! The group she had opening for her "The Tin Cups, etc." (sorry to say I did not get all of their name, however, they too were excellent; this group was out of Nashville.

Coming up next month is the Pittsburgh Irish Festival, September 9-11, at The Riverplex. This is a marvelous venue; outdoor with lots of green grass on the Mon River Bank. The entertainment looks to be quite good as well. Check them out online at www.pghirishfest.com.

Last week end I was having a real problem with my Verizon and could not send all the items that needed sending at that time; but the problem seems to be corrected now. And because of that problem I did not even try posting to this blog as I was tired of being frustrated.

Enjoy what you read and if you have any questions, do send me an email at diane.byrnes@verizon.net.
