Governor Martin O'Malley

Maryland Governor, Martin O'Malley

On Friday, September 26th, Maryland Governor Martin O'Malley visited Pittsburgh on behalf of the Obama Presidential Campaign. We conducted an interview that will be aired on Echoes of Erin on October 12th. Should you be unavailable to listen on the radio, then you can upload the program online at www.wedo810.com, click on Program Guide, then click on Echoes of Erin. The Program Number will be # 1073.

What a pitch for Heinz ketchup! (I caught the Governor eating his dinner, oops!!)

Governor O'Malley is one of seven Irish Ameican political leaders on an Irish Advisary Panel created by Senator Obama to inform him on Irish issues. Our interview touched on some of this advice along with other concerns of the public and the selection of Senator Joe Biden as Vice President.

After our interview Pittsburgh City Controller, Michael Lamb introduced Governor O'Malley, who then addressed the crowd at Mullaney's Harp & Fiddle speaking on the many attributes of Senator Obama and issues of concern to the public.

Governor O'Malley as he is addressing the crowd.

After a short talk, Governor O'Malley put on a guitar and sang several songs for the crowd. He was a huge hit both in his address and his music. Part way through his set, Governor O'Malley was joined on stage with Ballad Singer, Pat Garvey of Washington / Baltimore area. Of course they knew each other!

Governor O'Malley and Pat Garvey; they did a good job together.

In attendance was the McFadden Family, Dan (white shirt), David Jr. (black shirt), David Sr. (blue shirt) and Ann, David's wife. Dan and David are the sons of Dan and Betty McFadden (both deceased); they were two terrific people whom I knew and enjoyed many times.

In years past when Martin O'Malley was Mayor of Baltimore, he brought his band O'Malley's March to Pittsburgh to first, play for his O'Malley Family Reunion, which was later opened to the public. Then secondly, O'Malley's March came back the next year and were such a huge hit at the Harp & Fiddle. It is really good to see and hear Martin O'Malley still playing music, even if it is only on occasion. His musical performances keep him on a level with ordinary people; and as a man with political aspirations I think this is so beneficial.

Martin O'Malley's father was originally from Pittsburgh, but later moved to Baltimore where he raised his family. Governor O'Malley has many family members in the area. It is always good to see him back in Pittsburgh!

Irish Ways and Brenna Briggs, Author

I recently purchased the above book and 4-CD set by Ron Kavana; it is a brilliant piece of work. For those interested in Irish history through music, this is an excellent account. Not meant to be all inclusive; it tells a lot of the story of Ireland and the thoughts and feelings of the ordinary person, throughout time through song.
The book is chronologically divided: CD-1 covers Per-historic Ireland to Normans, Henry VIII to William of Orange. CD-2 covenr penal Laws to Age of Revolution, Rights of Man & 1794. CD-3 covers Act of Union to Great Hunger, Emigration & The Diaspora; and CD-4 covers Fenians to Civil War, Free State to Modern Ireland.
Other musicians accompaning Ron Kavana include Brian McNeill, Gino Lupari, Shane McGowan, Terry Woods, Paddy Keenan and Niamh Parsons.
This truly is a marvelous piece of work with a beautifully illustrated book and four CD's and the written word that makes so much sense. If you want to learn about Ireland's history, Irish Ways is a good start!

Brenna Briggs, Author of the Liffey River Series -- Brenna has recently published her third book "The Secret of the Mountain of the Moon" and promises to be the most intriguing of the three.
Liffey Rivers is a 13-year old Irish Dancer and slueth; she seems to encounter situations that require use of her intuition and skill in solving mystery. Always an interesting character, Liffey Rivers is good reading for young folks and those of us not quite so young anymore.
Brenna interviewed on Echoes of Erin today and informed us the book is available in most book stores and online at www.Amazon.com.
