Telephone Interview with Danny Morrison

Today I had the priviledge of chatting with Danny Morrison in Belfast. Danny Morrison is an Author, Speaker, Presenter, Activist, and much more in his community. Danny was planning to come to America last fall for a speaking engagement in California. He went through the process of applying for the necessary Visa, however that whole exercise is still in limbo. In other words, our US State Department has yet to get back to Danny to approve or deny his entry into America.

It sure seems pretty unfair when governments require you to pay money in requesting the necessary papers to travel, then they do not inform you, either yes or no that you can come into the country. Shame on them; I don't expect they will give him back his money either. It is a bit of a robbery, wouldn't you say?

Danny Morrison has written six books and he is a Trustee of the Bobby Sands Trust. At one point he was PR Director for Sinn Fein, the Republican Party. I think he would be quite knowledgeable of current historical information on the North of Ireland, so much so he would generate much interest from Irish America and others interested in the history of modern Ireland.

We wish him much luck and success in trying to have this issue solved as I know at some point, many in Pittsburgh would be very interested in hearing what he has to say.

Congratulations Jim Lamb!

The Irish Government, Foreign Relations Minister Micheal Martin has appointed James Lamb, President of The Ireland Institute of Pittsburgh as Honorary Consul of Ireland in Pittsburgh on Friday, January 21, 2011. The Appointment was conducted by Irish Ambassador Michael Collins and accompanying him was Consul General of Ireland, Noel Kilkenny. Others paying tribute and acknowledging Jim's contribution to Ireland were Congressman Mike Doyle and Congressman Tim Murphy.

The Lamb Family including Tom and Barbara Lamb, Jim's parents; Tom & Katie Lamb, Michael & Jill Lamb, Barb & Bill Garvey, along with many other family members and extended family, plus friends, associates, and business partners were in attendance. It was such a fabulous evening!

This event took place at the new headquarters of Reed Smith LLC in downtown Pittsburgh and was Emceed and Hosted by Daniel Gallagher, Partner, Reed Smith, and Board Member of The Ireland Institute of Pittsburgh.

This is the very first appointment of an Honorary Consul of Ireland in America. Those of us who know Jim and have worked with him over the years, are very much aware of his contribution to peace and reconcillation in Ireland, his effectiveness as a leader in Irish America and in Pittsburgh; he is a visionary and an 'idea man' who knows how to implement an effective plan of action.

I expect Jim will bring more of Ireland to Pittsburgh and the surrounding area over the next several months and years. Congratulations Jim Lamb, you are the absolute choice for this role.

Hello and Happy New Year 2011

Hello Ladies and Gentlemen,

It has been quite a while since I posted to my blog; that was 2010 -- this is now 2011 and time to set new goals!

I plan to post here on a weekly basis providing you a variety of information from Dateline Irish (my calendar of events in the Pittsburgh, PA area), and other exciting news that may be happening!

The past year I continued to concentrate on not smoking; beginning January 5, 2011, I will begin my 3rd year of being smoke free (I have cheated on occasion, but not too much. Since I gave me permission to cheat, I find less desire to do it). One thing I realize about smoking, it took the edge off life -- traffic, annoyances, etc. So now I'm into cooking and have made some very delicious dishes and baked wonderful breads and scones. Of course with all of this cooking comes weight gain; so I think for 2011 I will concentrate on dropping a few pounds.

Weight loss will be one of my goals for this New Year! To all of you I wish you well; may you have good health, good work, good relationships, and a bit of good luck!

Happy New Year,
Diane Byrnes
